Idol – A global smash hit
Warm up:
Activity 1: (1. p. 29 textbook) Look at the logos. Are you familiar with them? Tell a partner what you know.
a. Pop Idol, created by the British entertainment executive Simon Fuller, is a music competition which began on British ITV on October 6, 2001 to select the best new young pop singer in the UK based on viewer voting and participation.
b. Who Wants to be a Millionaire or informally called Millionaire is an American television quiz show based upon the British programme of the same title, which offers a maximum prize of $1,000,000 for correctly answering a series of consecutive multiple choice questions.
c. Vietnam Idol is part of the Idol franchise of the original reality programme Pop Idol by Simon Fuller. The first season of Vietnam Idol aired on May 23, 2007 on HTV9, and the fourth season aired on August 17, 2012.
Activity 2: New words and expressions
1. smash hit (n.phr) /smæʃ hɪt/: a song, film or play that is very popular (sự thành công)

Eg: Interestingly, the song has quickly become a phenomenon among the young.
6. season (n): /ˈsiːzn/: a period of time in which a play is shown in one place; a series of plays, films or television programmes (mùa)
7. process (n) /ˈprəʊses/: a series of things that are done in order to achieve a particular result (tiến trình)
Eg: They began the difficult process of reforming the education system.
8. franchise (n) (v) /ˈfræntʃaɪz/: formal permission given by a government to somebody who wants to operate a public service as a business (sự nhượng quyền thương hiệu, nhượng quyền thương hiệu)
Eg: The Idol franchise was created in the UK by Simon Fuller.
9. eliminate (v) /ɪˈlɪmɪneɪt/: to remove or get rid of something (loại ra)
Eg: Two contestants were eliminated from last night’s show.
10. launch (v) /lɔːntʃ/: to make a product or service available to the public for the first time (ra mắt, giới thiệu)
